One of the most important themes shown in the novel Les Miserables was the degradation of men by poverty. Marius plays an important role in the novel representing this theme. Marius came from a wealthy family but, because of political issues he left his grandfather’s house seeking for change. Marius started his new life from scratch. “He had undergone everything, in the shape of privation; he had done everything, except get into debt. Rather than borrow, he did not eat. He had had many days of fasting.” (Hugo 184) Victor Hugo emphasizes the importance of them by showing, how someone who has everything they can ask for can lose it all. Marius suffers hunger and many other things. The hard decision Marius took after he left his house made him characterize the theme degradation of man by poverty. Marius is in a situation in which hope is lost little by little and there are so many obstacles which make you struggle in order to reach your goal. Victor Hugo demonstrates this struggle in Marius step by step he starts to overcome his obstacles but in order to reach his goals he has to fight against hunger, searching for hope, and his ideals.
